Sunscreen Review: Avene Very High Protection Lotion For Children SPF 50+
Avene sunscreens are very reputable for its strong UV protection. I have heard many stories about how reliable its protection is, and that European sunscreens are the best in terms of UV protection. Avene Very High Protection Lotion For Children SPF 50+ seems to be the most cost effective Avene sunscreen as it comes in a huge bottle of 100 ml.
I initially bought this sunscreen to be used after my Fractional CO2 Laser session because if its safe for kids, it should be good for my sensitive skin post-laser right? Previously I used Shiseido sunscreen on my face after laser session which made my skin stung a little which may be due to the alcohol. Besides that, I couldn’t remove the sunscreen completely after double cleansing because some of it would get stuck to the scabs on my skin. Hence, I thought I should use a chemical sunscreen instead of sunscreens which contain physical filters because chemical sunscreens are easier to remove.
When I use this sunscreen the next day after laser, my skin stung a little and I suppose all sunscreens would cause that because even my previous sunscreen stung my skin after laser. I don’t mind oily sunscreens as my skin is prone to dryness, but this Avene sunscreen lotion for kids is way too oily. It also has a strong white cast due to the Tinosorb M.
After using this sunscreen for 3 days, I have red bumps on my skin so I stopped using it, and thought I would use it on my body instead. I applied it onto my arms and my skin started itching in a few minutes so I quickly washed it all off! Hives formed and soon after, they also appeared on my legs even though I didn’t apply any of the sunscreen on my leg. To think that I have applied this sunscreen which I’m highly allergic to on my sensitive skin after laser… OMG! Thankfully, there aren’t any lasting negative effects.
I don’t know why I’m allergic to this sunscreen. I’m guessing it’s the Avobenzone. Although I had used other sunscreens with Avobenzone before without issues, I may have suddenly developed an allergic reaction to it. I’ve read that humans could suddenly develop an allergy to things they used to not have an allergic reaction to. Perhaps the Avobenzone content in Avene Very High Protection Lotion For Children SPF 50+ is too high or I have made my body allergic to Avobenzone because I applied it onto my sensitive skin after laser.
I’m convinced the hives were caused by Avobenzone because my skin would sting a little now when I use my favorite A’pieu Pure Block Natural Sun Cream SPF45 PA+++ even though I could tolerate it well in the past. Oh well, that means pretty much no more European and US sunscreens for me anymore because their chemical sunscreens usually contain Avobenzone.
I gave both the Avene and A’pieu sunscreens to my friend and they work fine for her. To think that Avene would market this sunscreen for children and hypersensitive skin… *shudders*.
